The Story of Poyaud Engines

The Poyaud story begins in the early 20th century in Surgères, France, where Abel Poyaud established a general engineering workshop in 1909. By 1918, he had founded the company that would bear his name, initially focusing on small petrol engines designed to power the dairy industry in the region. This practical, hands-on approach to engineering set the tone for the company’s future.

Poyaud’s early years were marked by innovation and adaptability. In 1927, the company expanded into the production of “heavy oil” engines, first as semi-diesels, then as two-stroke diesels. These engines, with outputs ranging from 5 to 40 horsepower, were built using metals supplied by a local foundry, Fonderies Charentaises, reflecting the company’s deep regional roots.

After World War II, Poyaud shifted to four-stroke diesel engine production, rapidly expanding its facilities in Surgères. The company’s name became a familiar sight, literally inscribed in relief on the long brick wall of its historic factory on rue de la Gare, a local landmark for decades.

Poyaud engines quickly gained a reputation for reliability and versatility. They powered not only French industry but also a wide array of marine vessels, ferries, coasters, fishing boats, passenger launches, river barges, and harbour tugs. The company even produced engines for military vehicles, including tanks.

By the 1970s, Poyaud was exporting engines internationally and even planned a manufacturing plant in Swansea, Wales, to meet growing demand for marine and generator engines in the UK and beyond.

How did working with Bartech benefit you / your company on this project?

“Rob and his team at Bartech have time and time again assisted our company even when we ask for unrealistic timescales and results. They have identified and quoted for spares at each enquiry without fail.

This simple and quick response makes acquiring the right spares, right quality first time possible and allows us to return important plant back into service quicker than anticipated.

Look forward to working together in the coming years.”

Phil Keane ~ EDF Heysham

“Bartech professionally delivered on all promised work within schedule.

By utilising the experience and expertise of the Bartech engineers we were able to simultaneously liquidate a number of jobs.

The engineer’s problem-solving ability meant that long-standing issues were corrected.

The technical expertise on this particular fire pump was first class.”

Wood Group PSN on behalf of Shell.

“Bartech helped maintain & achieve our recovery plan in a safe manner & also implementing the improvements required to prevent similar incidents.

They were very adaptable to our urgent requirements and used all of their resources possible to expedite the safe return of P-7230 fire water pump.

Bartech exceeded our expectations during this intervention.”
