The Story of Poyaud Engines

The Poyaud story begins in the early 20th century in Surgères, France, where Abel Poyaud established a general engineering workshop in 1909. By 1918, he had founded the company that would bear his name, initially focusing on small petrol engines designed to power the dairy industry in the region. This practical, hands-on approach to engineering set the tone for the company’s future.

Poyaud’s early years were marked by innovation and adaptability. In 1927, the company expanded into the production of “heavy oil” engines, first as semi-diesels, then as two-stroke diesels. These engines, with outputs ranging from 5 to 40 horsepower, were built using metals supplied by a local foundry, Fonderies Charentaises, reflecting the company’s deep regional roots.

After World War II, Poyaud shifted to four-stroke diesel engine production, rapidly expanding its facilities in Surgères. The company’s name became a familiar sight, literally inscribed in relief on the long brick wall of its historic factory on rue de la Gare, a local landmark for decades.

Poyaud engines quickly gained a reputation for reliability and versatility. They powered not only French industry but also a wide array of marine vessels, ferries, coasters, fishing boats, passenger launches, river barges, and harbour tugs. The company even produced engines for military vehicles, including tanks.

By the 1970s, Poyaud was exporting engines internationally and even planned a manufacturing plant in Swansea, Wales, to meet growing demand for marine and generator engines in the UK and beyond.

“One of the most impressive aspects Taqa found with Bartech was there response time.

A recovery plan to get P-7230 returned to service was quickly established and implemented. Bartech were extremely flexible and fully onboard with all of Taqa’s requirements.

Bartech meet and exceeded our expectations during this intervention.

We are hopeful that this level of service can be maintained & look forward to working with Bartech in the future.”

“We have a long term service agreement with Bartech so putting together the work scope was made easy as we have worked with them in the past and know how they work in a professional matter.

All the organisation and spares were taken care of by the project engineer, once this was ready Bartech and CNR had a conference call with the platform to discuss the scope and iron out any issues that may arise during the scope and controls were put in place to prevent issues arising.”

Alan Farquhar ~ CNR Ninian Central Platform

How did working with Bartech benefit you / your company on this project?

“Restored availability of our emergency generation package in support of meeting our first oil date.

Bartech were able to support Solan’s corrective maintenance requirements on our Turner packaged MTU diesel generator set, when Turner EPS could not, due to both material and competency issues.

Our experience of working with Bartech was rewarding and we will certainly look to do business with them again.”

Mike Oliver ~ Premier Oil

How did working with Bartech benefit you / your company on this project?

“When a fault was found with the water cooler adaptor plate, a new part was sourced and sent out to the platform the following day. This meant the crane could be returned to service as planned and therefore no downtime experienced.”

What were you most impressed with working with Bartech?

“The technical knowledge and speed of sourcing the required part. The platform also commented positively on the work ethic of the engineer on the job.”

Steven Bain ~ EnerMech
