Recently, our engineers were called in to look at an MAN engine that just wouldn’t start. No warning, no obvious cause, just a frustrating silence from the starter panel.
Once onboard, we worked through the usual checks:
- Power to the batteries
- Fuse integrity
- Fault codes
- Wiring continuity
Everything looked fine on the surface. But, after a deeper investigation and teaming up with the onboard electrician, we discovered the real issue: a failed neutral position sensor in the gearbox.
It’s the kind of small component most don’t think about until it brings the whole system to a halt.
After confirming the diagnosis by swapping a working sensor from the other engine, everything came back online, and the control panel faults cleared.
These situations are a good reminder that not every engine issue is inside the engine. Sometimes, it’s about understanding the full picture, including controls, electronics, integration and having the right process to work through it methodically.
