A customer sent us their governor for urgent inspection due to an intermittent engine speed runaway issue.
The governor, a Woodward UG-8L Lever Governor was placed on our Woodward test bench for inspection & testing, the test took 3 hours. No faults were found, and the governor was given a clean bill of health – great peace of mind for the operator.
Knowing that the governor was ok, we went back to the operator with a few suggestions of things they could check.
- Westing Wheel Valve
- Excessive gear wear
- Air control system (air start engine)
The customer is arranging a time for Daveed from Bartech Controls to come out and investigate further, and price up an electrical control system.
This got me thinking about whether others have the same peace of mind when it comes to their governor:
- Do you know what type of system is controlling your engine speed?
- When was the last time it was serviced and/or calibrated?
- Do you have overspeed protection?
- When was the last time it was serviced and/or calibrated?
- Do you have onboard spares?
