Following on from last week’s post about the damage caused by incorrect tooling, I thought it would be good to share one way of overcoming this type of problem.
We’re currently in the process of overhauling some large conrods, but when we came to replace the small end bushes, the tool wasn’t available from the vessel or even the OEM.
Thanks to our experience in major overhauls, our Senior Machinist was able to design and manufacture this tool using our in-house CAD and machining capabilities.
The removal tool worked perfectly and allowed us to continue the overhaul with minimal downtime, no extra cost to the operator and – most importantly – without damaging the connecting rods.

These rods also required the use of a hydraulic pack to change the big end studs to measure the big end bore against the specification.
If you are short of specialist tooling or would benefit from a machinist or engineers that will work to provide solutions, get in touch, we’d be happy to help.
