MTU 1600 Fuel Supply Issues

So, here we are, still working through the UK “lockdown”.

And while the restriction of movement is having a large impact on lots of things, we have seen an increase in the number of breakdown responses and we had one last week, which may seem straight forward, but still put a client’s contract in jeopardy.

The first contact we had was a call to rectify a fuel leak from the right bank high-pressure pump assembly on an MTU 1600 engine.

After carrying out some investigation work, we found the generator set had a test run in the yard for 10 minutes without an auxiliary fuel tank assembly connected.

When started, it used the fuel in the lines, then came to an abrupt stop!

With both high-pressure pumps working, the optimum pressure was around 400 bar and without the generator set connected to a fuel supply the fuel had nowhere to return, causing the pressure to build up in the return lines until it found the weakest point, which in this case was the high-pressure pump seal.

The result a was a replacement fuel pump and an express shipment from Germany before we could get the set back operational just as it was due on contract.

A close call and a few pounds spent, but something that could easily have been avoided.
