We’re in the middle of an overhaul of two power generation engines and we just came across something that is all too common with radiator-cooled engines and thought you might benefit from discovering it.
On initial view, the radiators look fine and in decent condition.
However, when we inspected the fins they were extremely corroded and just flaked away to the touch.
As you know, this will impact the cooling ability and if anything comes into contact with the fins during use, further damaging them, it could easily lead to the engine overheating and a whole host of associated issues.
Thankfully we’ve found this in time, but if your engines rely on radiator cooling, it’s important to ask the question:
How often are they inspected, and is it just a visual inspection, or a more thorough physical check?
We recommend they’re checked yearly – usually when your engine is serviced – to catch any defects before they lead to knock-on issues.
