Earlier this month, we carried out a planned 1000-hour service on a pair of MAN main engines. On the face of it, this was a routine visit—checking valve clearances, replacing filters, testing turbochargers, and running diagnostics.
But as always, it’s the details that make the difference.
Alongside the expected maintenance tasks, we picked up on a few additional issues:
- A badly worn V-belt on one of the engines = replaced before it could cause problems
- Minor coolant and oil leaks were spotted early = flagged for monitoring
- Some legacy fault codes were still stored in the ECU = cleared to prevent future confusion
It’s a great reminder that a service isn’t just about ticking off a checklist. It’s about looking beyond the basics, spotting early signs of wear, and keeping everything running smoothly between overhauls.
