Results of fuel in oil
Our engineers have just come back from attending an emergency generator with a Deutz BF6M 1013E engine that had reported fuel in the oil.
During this attendance, our engineers were really surprised in what they found, and once again provided an example of the benefits of carrying out thorough engine checks.
This engine is a standby set, so it’s rarely used, with just 53 hours on the clock.
Despite this, it was emitting smoke so thick that the fire brigade was being called every time it was run!
The initial investigation showed diesel in the oil, so we were called to replace the injectors and seals to prevent any future leaks.
Whilst the injectors were removed, we used our borescope to check the internals of the engine and this is what we found when looking at the piston in cylinder 6:
Whilst we continue our investigations into the cause, it shows the value in carrying out internal checks no matter how easy it may look to resolve a problem.
With continued running, there could have been some irreparable engine damage.
