Swapping a Dorman 6PTCR with a Doosan PU158
Our engineer, Cris, has just returned from a high-profile client site, exchanging a Dorman 6PTCR engine for a Doosan PU158, which was being managed by the site engineers.
(Sorry, but no photos this week because of site restrictions.)The new engine is now fully operational, but not without us correcting alignment issues including:
• The modified bedframe was not ground and did not match expected measurements – we had to manufacture a different set of shims
• Fuel supply piping would not align to the new engine – pipework needed to be adapted
This additional work added unnecessary time and cost to the project and could have been prevented if all engineering aspects had been considered during the project planning.
It’s easy to point out these errors, but as there are many areas to cover on a project like this, it makes sense to involve area specialists to reduce the chances of the errors actually occurring.
If you are involved in the replacement of an engine, a site survey and involvement in the planning stage by all related companies are key to remaining on time and on budget.
