Engineering Projects Case Study

Overhaul of Schotell Steering Unit for Dredger

Challenge:

Propeller on the steering unit was caught on the sea bed, damaging the propeller and causing the internal bearing to break-up which passed debris through the gears, making them unusable.  The dredger was no longer able to continue it's contract until the steering unit was repaired

How we helped:

  • Completely dismantled, cleaned and inspected the assembly.
  • Full report issued to the vessel owners with photographs
  • To overcome the OEM's delivery time for the replacement bevel gears we were able to have these manufactured by a trusted gear cutting company within 5 working days.
  • The unit was rebuilt using new consumable parts.
  • Repaired propeller and securely fitted it to the assembly.
  • Painted all exposed metal surfaces with additional environmentally safe anti-fouling paint.
  • Despatched unit and fitted it to the vessel while in dock.

Results:

Dredger operational again within 10 working days.  Due to the importance of this item, and the regularity of the propeller hitting the sea bed, a spare has been purchased which we store and exchange as required ensuring downtime is kept to a minimum.
